No Excuses

“You’re in charge. You’re responsible for whatever happens. No excuses.”

-Hyung J. Song

I hated hearing those words from my father when I was a teenager and I was “in charge” of my 3 younger brothers. I didn’t understand how I was responsible for the things they did and especially for what happened to them. The “no excuses” bit really made no sense to me when my brothers would go off and do something stupid, but I eventually learned the life lesson he was trying to teach me.

There are plenty of valid reasons why each of us don’t do what we should. Time, money, kids, work, debt, significant others, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, co-workers, managers, competitors, etc. – you name it, they’re all valid reasons we can’t be better, richer or skinnier.

But not according to my Dad. According to him:

  • Decide what you want.
  • Plan and write down how and what you’re going to do.
  • Make time to do it.
  • Get a coach or team-mate to do it with you.
  • Track your progress daily in writing (he made me keep a journal).
  • Make tweaks as necessary.
  • Rinse and Repeat.

Simple enough.
